Priority Targeting Update

Nov.16.2018 BY KIXEYE_Chris

The following two changes to targeting are deploying over the next set of updates, which we believe will make combat more intuitive and seamless than it is now.

DAMAGE AGGRO OFF

On November 19th, Aggro is being disabled in combat. This means your units will not instinctively chase something that damages them, which is what causes the often frustrating situation of a unit rushing through the middle of a base to destroy a turret that’s damaging them from afar. Or, more commonly, having a countermeasure unit start chasing a defensive air unit around the map.

Units will continue to fire on what is closest to them. At least, until the next section rolls out.

PRIORITY TARGETING

On November 26th, Priority Targeting is being enabled in combat. This primarily impacts the way defensive turrets and offensive secondary weapons choose what to attack.

Defensive Turrets
Defensive Turrets now prioritize high-survivability units over other units when both are in range. This means if a defensive turret is firing on a DPS unit (like the HIMARS) and a high-survivability unit (like the Leopard Tank) moves into range, the turret will switch targets to the high-survivability unit.

Examples of high survivability units that Defensive Turrets will now choose as a priority over others are:

  • Tanks like the Abrams
  • Carriers like the BMP
  • Gunships like the HIND
  • Air Support like the AC-130.

Offensive Secondary
Offensive secondary weapons are a bit more complex, but they will now prioritize based on the armor of enemies. Armor is typically standardized across unit classes. So a good general guideline is:

  • Machine Guns prioritize Helicopters
  • Explosive weapons prioritize Light Vehicles
  • Armor Piercing weapons prioritize Heavy Vehicles
  • Siege weapons prioritize turret platforms and then fall back to their armor type.

The design intention here is to allow users to better customize platoons against specific enemies that are giving you trouble. You can now adjust your secondary weapons to choose what you want your secondaries to target first, assuming multiple targets are in range.

We will be listening in community channels, such as our Discord server, for feedback on these changes once they are released, and are certainly prepared to continue iterating on this design until it’s the most seamless that it can possibly be.

Good luck!
